Relations between Ukraine and the Republic of Latvia have deep historical traditions, enjoy mutual trust and cooperation. Latvia has been very active in supporting Ukraine since the Revolution of Dignity, the illegal annexation of Crimea and the Russian aggression in the East of Ukraine. Latvia has been actively assisting Ukraine in the reformation process and supporting Kyiv’s European integration bid.
The countries maintain dynamic political dialogue. President Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine visited Riga on May 21-22, 2015 with a view of taking part in the Eastern Partnership Summit during the Presidency of Latvia of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2015.
On 26-28 October President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis paid his first official visit in new capacity to Ukraine upon the invitation of President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. A member of his delegation, Minister for Agriculture of Latvia Jānis Dūklavs and Minister for Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Oleksii Pavlenko in the presence of the two Presidents signed the Memorandum of understanding and cooperation.
On 4 April 2017 upon the invitation of President Raimonds Vējonis of Latvia President Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine paid an official visit to Latvia, having met with his counterpart tete-a-tete and in enlarged mode, convened a meeting with Speaker of the Saeima Ināra Mūrniece and Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations the Presidents approved the Joint Statement.
During the visit in the presence of the two presidents Minister for Ecology and Natural Resurces Ostap Semerak and Minister for Natural Environment Protection and Regional Development of Latvia Kaspars Gerhards signed the Agreement on bilateral cooperation in the natural environment protection.
On 6 April 2017 Kyiv hosted the Second Ukrainian - Baltic Prime Ministerial Forum with the Prime Ministers of Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. It mainly focused on strengtheing security in the region and European integration of Ukraine: synergy with the Baltics. Prime Ministers signed the Joint Statement. The first meeting of Prime Ministers of Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia was held on 5 November 2015 in Riga attended by Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, who held negotiations with the leadership of the Republic of Latvia - Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma, President Raimonds Vējonis, Saeima Speaker Ināra Mūrniece, solemnly opened the first in Latvia monument to Taras Shevchenko and delivered a speech at the opening of the 10th Riga Conference.
On 29-30 September 2017 with the aim of participation in the Riga Conference Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin paid a working visit to Latvia. During the visit the Minister signed the Intergovernmental Agreement on Cooperation in Education, Science, Youth and Sports.
On 12-13 December 2017 Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andrii Parubiy paid an official visit to Latvia, having met with President Raimonds Vējonis and Speaker of the Saeima Ināra Mūrniece.
On 1-2 March 2018 Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman visited Latvia on an official visit, having met with President Raimonds Vējonis and his counterpart Māris Kučinskis, as well as representatives of Latvian business. In the presence of the two Prime Ministers, Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Liliia Hrynevych and Minsiter of Education and Science of Latvia Kārlis Šadurskis signed the Protocol of Intentions concerning Cooperation to Support the Riga Ukrainian Secondary School.
On 15-18 May 2018 upon the invitation of Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy Speaker of the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia Ināra Mūrniece paid an official visit to Ukraine, having not only held official negotiations, but also visited the city of Slovyansk, the Donetsk region, where she vitnessed the consequences of the Russian agression against Ukraine.
On 20 June 2018 Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs visited Ukraine on a working visit.
On 23-25 November 2018 with the purpose of participation in the International Forum "Ukraine Remembers, the World Recognizes!" President Raimonds Vējonis visited Ukraine on an official visit and made a trip to the city of Maryanka of the Donetsk region, where he met with Ukrainian servicemen of the Joint Forces Operation.
The country maintain constant dialogue at the intergovernmental and interagency level. Traditionally fruitful is cooperation between the Group for interparliamentary relations of the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia (the new chairman of the group after the parliamentary election in Latvia is Aldis Adamovičs ("new Unity"), 42 members) and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Group for interparliamentary relations with the Republic of Latvia (Chairman Oleksandr Kodola (People’s Front), 34 members). The interparliamentary cooperation between Ukraine and Latvia is also actively developing in the multilateral format. In particular, on February 1-2, 2016 Kyiv hosted a joint visit of Speakers of Baltic and Nordic parliaments. The visit became possible due to the latvian initiative and was a folow-up visit after March 16-17, 2015 similar visit to Kyiv.
