Riga hosted consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Latvia, devoted to Latvia’s presidency in the council of the EU, co-chaired by Director General of the Directorate General for the EU of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Vsevolod Chentsov and Director of First Bilateral Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Vilmārs Heniņš.
The parties discussed the agenda of the Latvian presidency in the Council of the EU, developments in the East of Ukraine, implementation of the Minsk agreements, exchanged opinions on approaches in counteraction to current threats to European security.
The Ukrainian party gave the detailed information about the process of reforms and expressed its vision of more active engagement of EU expertise with a view of reform boosting.
The Latvia MFA representative stressed on his country’s position that the development of relations between the EU and Russia depended on its abiding the Minsk agreements.
According to him, Latvia as the EU presiding country will promote active development of differentiated relations with Eastern Partnership countries. He expressed confidence that the Riga Eastern Partnership Summit slated for May 2015 would give powerful signals of support for EU partner states.
By way of commenting on the skepticism of some EU members on EU enlargement and Ukraine ambitions, Ukraine MFA representative emphasized that “one may argue the preparedness of Ukraine for the membership in the EU but on one can argue the right and aspiration of Ukrainians to be a full-sledged part of the EU”.
