Ukraine and Latvia Bilateral Relations
15 August 2012 22:52

On August 26, 1991 Ukraine recognized independence of the Republic of Latvia, and on December 4, 1991 Latvia recognized independence of Ukraine. Diplomatic relations were established on February 12, 1992. In Riga functions the Embassy of Ukraine, headed by Ambassador Olexandr Mischenko. The Embassy of the Republic of Latvia in Ukraine is headed by Ambassador Juris Poikans.

The relationship between Ukraine and the Republic of Latvia has been built upon the long-standing historical traditions and is now exhibiting a high level of trust, interaction and dialogue.

Latvia consistently supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as Kyiv’s commitment to the European and Euro-Atlantic integration. Moreover, the Latvian side continues rendering robust assistance to Ukraine in implementing reforms in our country.

A dynamic political dialogue is being maintained between both countries, inter alia, at the top and high levels. On October 16, 2019, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy paid an official visit to Latvia. On February 24-25, 2020, the Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Dmytro Razumkov paid an official visit to the Republic of Latvia. On May 20, 2019, Raimonds Véjonis, the then President of Latvia, paid a working visit to Ukraine and participated in the inauguration of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The bilateral dialogue is being kept up on a regular basis at intergovernmental, interparliamentary and interagency levels, notably between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Republic of Latvia. Thus, on October 7-8, 2019, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs paid an official visit to Ukraine.

The Ukrainian – Latvian Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Industrial, Scientific and Technical Cooperation remains functional and effective. The Group for promoting the interparliamentary cooperation with Ukraine was established by the Saeima (Parliament) of the Republic of Latvia (this Saeima’s Group is chaired by Aldis Adamovičs and totals 44 parliamentarians). There is also a Group for promoting the interparliamentary cooperation with Latvia that was established in Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada on October, 2019, headed by the co-chairs Solomiia Bobrovska and Taras Tarasenko.
