On August 24, 2016 Ukraine marks the 25th anniversary of an outstanding historical event – the adoption in 1991 of the Act of Proclamation of Independence of Ukraine with the absolute majority of votes of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR.
The appearance of the sovereign Ukraine played a decisive role in the collapse of the USSR and the final destruction of the communist totalitarian system. It has become the beginning of a new stage of the development of the democratic modern Ukrainian State.
However on August 24, 1991 we actually witnessed the restoration of the independence of Ukraine that crowned the long lasting way of the Ukrainian people to its independence.
The proclamation of Independence of Ukraine on August 24, 1991 has logically completed the process of Ukrainian statehood formation. When celebrating the 25th anniversary of adoption of the Act of Proclamation of Independence of Ukraine, we honor all previous stages of development of the Ukrainian statehood from the Kyiv Rus, Principality of Galicia–Volhynia, Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Cossack State and Ukrainian statehood in early 20th century.
