On September 21, 2016 a member of the parliament, Deputy Chairperson of the Committee for European Integration Mariia Ionova visited Riga to participate in the public discussion “Eastern Partnership One Year After Riga: Where Next? Insights from Latvia, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine”. The discussion was staged by the Latvian Institute of International Affairs being initiated by the Embassies of Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova in Latvia supported by the Foreign Ministry of Latvia.
The event was also attended by State Secretary of the Foreign Ministry of Latvia Andrejs Pildegovičs, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Gigi Gigiadze, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova Daniela Morari and Director of the Latvian Institute of International Affairs Andris Sprūds as a moderator.
In her speech the Ukrainian member of parliament briefed the audience about the course of reforms in Ukraine with a view of implementation of the Association Agreement. Ms. Ionova stressed on the wide national consensus on EU integration: “European integration of Ukraine is Ukraine’s returning to its European family”.
During her visit to Latvia Mariia Ionova also met with Chairperson of the Saeima Committee on European Affairs Lolita Čigāne and Parliamentary Secretary of the Foreign Ministry Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica. The Ukrainian side conveyed the Statement of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on non-recognition of the legitimacy of elections to the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of Russia and urged Latvia no to recognize the whole Russian elections.
