On 10 February Ambassador of Ukraine to Latvia was invited to the Saeima by Chairperson of the Committee on European Affairs Lolita Čigāne.
The farewell meeting, which was also attended by Head of the Latvian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Edvīns Šnore, was mainly focused on priorities of further agenda and summarizing cooperation with the outgoing Ambassador.
Ambassador Yevgen Perebyinis briefed the members of the Latvian parliament on the developments in the East of Ukraine and consequences of the recent military escalation in Avdiyivka. In the context of significance of Euroatlantic links to address the EU challenges, the Ambassador informed about intensive contacts between the Ukrainian government and the new US administration.
The parties to the meeting were unanimous about no other alternative to the Minsk agreements and about the need to continue political pressure on Russia by the international community to comply with the Minsk arrangements and international commitments. “Russia should bear consequences of its violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, that is why international community and the EU should remain united in continuation of the sanctions against Russia”, Ms Chairperson remarked.
The participants in the meeting also discussed Russia’s aggressive propaganda against Ukraine and the EU, including falsifying the history of their countries. In that connection, Edvīns Šnore underlined the importance of telling the world the historical truth about Ukraine and Latvia.
