On 4 August 2017 Minister of Defence Raimonds Bergmanis met in Cēsis with 25 Ukrainian children of the fallen Ukrainian defenders, servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the National Guard of Ukraine, who were holidaying in Latvia between July 31 and 5 August.
“We were pleased to help Ukraine not only in strengthening Ukrainian defence capabilities, but also in different social projects. We would like to give our support to children, who went through the war, lost their fathers, faced pain and suffering”, Mr Raimonds said.
During their holiday the Ukrainian children together with jaunsargs were participating in different sport competitions, visited different places of interests, excursions. They were invited to come to Latvia upon the invitation of the Defense Ministry and supported by the Youth Guard Centre, the Instructors’ School, army chief chaplain Elmārs Pļaviņš and the National Guard of Ukraine.
The fourth year in a row the Latvian defense sector is providing humanitarian assistance to those, who suffered from the Russian aggression in Ukraine – the servicemen and their families, sending gifts and school items to the children. This year the Latvian assistance was mainly focused on sending humanitarian cargoes to the Donetsk region, where the need of the Army and the peaceful population was most critical.
