On 22 January Ukraine marked Unity Day, when in 1919 the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic united in one state.
On this occasion Charge d’Affaires a.i. Alisa Podolyak convened a thematic lesson at the Riga Ukrainian Secondary School for 9-11 form pupils briefing about the historic events prior to the Act of Unity – the establishment of the Ukrainian People’s Republic on 22 January 1918, fighting of the young state for its independence against the Bolshevik Russia and the heroism of Ukrainian students in the Battle of Kruty on 29 January 1918.
Ukrainian and Latvian schoolchildren were shown the short film “Act of Unity: restoration of historical truth” by T.Koliandruk.
Later on the day diplomats of the Embassy together with the Ukrainian community and Latvian friends of Ukraine joined the 4th international flashmob “United Ukraine”, dedicated to the Day of Unity of Ukraine – those who gathered at the Taras Shevchenko Monument sang the anthems of Ukraine and Latvia and honoured the memory of Ukrainians and Latvians, who fought for the countries’ independence.
