On 18 May 1944 the totalitarian Stalin regime started a scaled operation of deportation of the Crimean Tatar people from their native land.
Over 200 thousand of people due to fake charges of cooperation with Nazis have been expelled. Today the genocide of Crimean Tatars by the occupation Russian power continues.
On 18 May 2018 the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Latvia commemorated victims of the Crimean Tatar genocide and all those, who were oppressed during the Stalin times.
On this day the Ukrainian and the Crimean Tatar flags were flying at half-staff upon the memory of victims of Communist atrocities.
Having observed the minute of silence, the Ukrainian diplomats laid flowers at the Victims of Communist Terror Memorial at Torņakalns Station in Riga.
Later on the day the prayer for Ukraine and victims of genocide was served at the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Riga eparchy.
