On 22 January, on the day of Unity of Ukraine, in Riga took place events to mark the 100th anniversary of the Act of Unity of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the Western Ukrainian People's Republic (“Akt Zluky of UNR and ZUNR”, 1919). The slogan for this year was "Together of Our Own Free Will since 1919".
On this occasion Charge d’Affaires a.i. Alisa Podolyak conducted a thematic lecture at the Riga Ukrainian Secondary School for high school pupils briefing about the historic events preceding to the Act of Unity – the establishment of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, fighting of the young state for its independence against the Bolshevik Russia and the heroism of Ukrainian students in the Battle of Kruty on 29 January 1918. Schoolchildren were also shown a short film "Zluka. The Unity Day of Ukraine".
On the same day, diplomats of the Embassy together with the Ukrainian community and Latvian friends of Ukraine gathered for the laying-flowers ceremony at the Taras Shevchenko monument in the park of Kronvalda and joined patriotic flashmob #UnitedUkraine.
Later, at the Embassy of Ukraine in Latvia, the Ukrainian documentary-based film "Ukrainian Revolution" directed by I.Kanivtsev was screened. This movie of 2012 covers the period of the revolutionary events of 1917-1918 in Ukraine based on the memories of the Major General of Army of the UNR Vsevolod Petriv.
Afterwards, during her statement to the auditorium, A.Podolyak reminded a few quotes from the original text of the “Akt Zluky”. She also emphasized the importance of committing to memory of our great history, of all the struggle processes of Ukrainians for their free and independent State, which is unfortunately continues to this day.
The guests also had the opportunity to view the short film "Zluka. The Unity Day of Ukraine"and to communicate in a friendly atmosphere.
