On 4 March 2019 the Embassy of Ukraine held the public discussion “Role of Writers in combating Propaganda and Promoting Freedom of Speech in Post-Truth Era”.
World famous Ukrainian writers, members of PEN Ukraine Andrii Kurkov and Yurii Vynnychuk, State Secretary of the Ministry of information policy Artem Bidenko, member of the Saeima, Deputy Secretary Marija Golubeva and Latvian writers and PEN Latvia members Ilmārs Šlāpins and Inga Gaile.
The participants discussed the role of the government and the civil society in protection of the freedom of speech under conditions of Russian aggression. The speakers talked in detail about the Ukrainian and Latvian approaches to creating the information and cultural identity of countries under conditions of the aggressive information policy of Russia in the world. Andrii Kurkov shared the experience of the Ukrainian PEN club in standing for the rights of Ukrainian political prisoners and how the Russian aggression influenced modern literature in Ukraine.
The State Secretary explained the tasks and activities of the Information Policy Ministry with a view of fighting Russian propaganda in the occupied territories and confronting information operations of Russia in Ukraine.
The event was held with the support of Ukrainian and Latvian PEN clubs and attended by foreign diplomats, accredited in Riga, journalists and civil society representatives.
