In the framework of his working visit to Latvia on January 16th, 2012 Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Kostyantyn Gryshchenko held talks with the Foreign Minister of Latvia Edgards Rinkēvičs.
Both Ministers stressed the importance of intensive political dialogue between the two countries and welcomed the upcoming visits to Latvia of the Prime Minister of Ukraine and the Speaker of the Parliament of Ukraine. Minister Gryshchenko also invited his Latvian colleague to visit Ukraine to further strengthen cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Latvia both on bilateral and international agenda.
The Parties agreed to hold the next session of bilateral Commission on Economic Cooperation in the second quarter of this year, as well as to exert joint efforts to implement the project of train cargo transportation “Zubr”. Minister Gryshchenko informed on the measures undertaken by appropriate state institutions to ensure proper functioning of this project.
During the meeting the Parties highly appreciated the successful implementation of the reconstruction project of the Riga Ukrainian Secondary School - a unique institution in the Baltic countries, where education is provided in Ukrainian and Latvian languages.
Special attention during the meeting was given to Ukraine's European integration. Minister Gryshchenko thanked the Latvian side for consistent support of European integration aspirations of Ukraine. The Ministers welcomed the conclusion of negotiations between Ukraine and the EU on Association Agreement and supported its further initialling and signing. Ukraine's progress in implementing of the EU-Ukraine Action Plan on establishment of a visa-free regime, as well as association agenda with the EU was also among the key issues of the discussion.
Both Ministers exchanged views on cooperation within international organizations, including the UN, OSCE, and the CBSS (Council of Baltic Sea States).
The Ministers for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Latvia signed the Joint Communique, and held a joint press conference upon conslusion of their meeting.
