On 29 April the official meeting of Ambassador of Ukraine to Latvia Olexandr Mischenko with Speaker of the Saeima Ināra Mūrniece confirmed invariable strong support by the Republic of Latvia of Ukraine’s efforts in defending its territorial integrity and sovereignty, struggle against the Russian aggression.
The Chairperson of the Latvian parliament condemned the decree of the Russian president on simplification of Russian citizenship procedures for Ukrainian citizens in temporarily occupied areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which is aimed at further escalating the conflict.
The Ukrainian Ambassador thanked Latvia for clear condemnation of violation of norms of the international law by Russia, in particular the statement of the Saeima of 13 December 2018 on Russia’s aggression in the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait and adoption by the Saeima’s Foreign Affairs Committee of the Statement on the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the deportation of Crimean Tatars and expressing support for the policy of non-recognition of the illegal annexation of Crimea. The Saeima Speaker confirmed the intention to adopt the similar statement by the parliament in May.
Ināra Mūrniece commended democratic elections in Ukraine and stressed the resoluteness to further develop dynamic interparliamentary cooperation. As it was noted, the Latvian Saeima views interpaliamentary dialogue with Ukraine as a priority, which is proved by a numerous group for promoting cooperation with the Ukrainian parliament.
