On June 7, 2019, in the context of paving the way towards further deepening the cooperation with the regions of Latvia, Ambassador of Ukraine Olexandr Mischenko payed a working visit to the Vidzeme Planning Region (its gross regional product totalled over 1.3 billion euros – around 7% of Latvia's GDP) and visited the municipalities of Pārgauja (Daibē), Amata and Cēsis.
In the framework of the visit to the Vidzeme Planning Region, Oleksandr Mischenko met with Hardiis Vents, Chairman of the Vidzeme Planning Region’s Development Council, and Guna Kalniņa-Priede, Head of the Administration of the Vidzeme Planning Region’s Development Council. The ways to develop the cooperation between the Ukrainian local authorities and the Vidzeme Planning Region of Latvia were discussed by the sides within the meetings. The Ambassador welcomed the signing of the Cooperation Agreement between the Odessa Regional State Administration and the Development Council of the Vidzeme Planning Region (concluded in Odesa on May 21, 2019), which opens new opportunities for the bilateral inter-regional cooperation.
Apart from it, the prospects of cooperation through applying the experience of the Latvian municipalities in terms of attracting financing by using the EU funds were discussed. At the same time, the interlocutors discussed a way to arrange the recreational visit of the Ukrainian children to the Vidzeme Planning Region.
While visiting the North Vidzeme Waste Management Organisation in Daibē (its working capacity was put in place by using, inter alia, the EU funds), as well as the North Vidzeme Educational and Ecological Centre, the Ambassador of Ukraine was given exposure to the waste processing system operating in the Vidzeme region in accordance with the EU standards and explored some opportunities for how such experience could be applied across the Ukrainian regions.
