From 28 to 30 August 2026, Riga will host the Ukrainian Film Days in Latvia — three days dedicated to Ukrainian cinema, its history, culture, and contemporary stories.
The programme features four Ukrainian films, ranging from a classic of Ukrainian poetic cinema to recent feature films and documentaries.
28 August | 19:00
“The Eternal One” (Vichnyk) — a historical drama directed by Ivan Nikolaichuk and based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Myroslav Dochynets. A philosophical journey exploring the search for meaning, dignity, loss, and love.
29 August | 17:00
“The Eve of Ivan Kupala” — Yuri Ilyenko’s landmark 1968 mystical drama, one of the most significant works of Ukrainian poetic cinema, which was once banned by Soviet censorship.
29 August | 19:00
“Animals in War” — an anthology of seven stories based on real events. The film focuses on the lives of domestic and wild animals caught in the midst of hostilities during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Hollywood actor Sean Penn stars in the first episode.
The screenings on 28–29 August will take place at Splendid Palace (Elizabetes iela 61, Riga).
30 August | 14:00
“Perun’s Flute” — a documentary drama directed by Yevhen Mazurenko, based on footage filmed directly at a combat position. The protagonists of the film are Ukrainian artillery soldiers.
The screening will take place at the Ukrainian House in Latvia (Strūgu iela 4, Riga).
Admission to all screenings is free.
We warmly invite the Ukrainian community, our Latvian friends, and everyone interested in cinema to discover different chapters of Ukrainian filmmaking — from its cinematic heritage to powerful stories of contemporary Ukraine.
