On 24 May 2011, to conclude the month of events dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident, Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Latvia Mr. Anatoliy Oliynyk presented Latvian liquidators – members of the Latvian Union «Chernobyl» – with certificates of merit of the Ministry of Emergencies of Ukraine.
In his greeting the liquidators, Mr. Anatoliy Oliynyk stressed the scale and the effects of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power station, drew attention to the importance of international cooperation, told about the measures undertaken by Ukraine to transform the zone of 4th reactor into ecologically safe territory. Special attention was devoted to the results of international fora, initiated by President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and held in Kyiv this April - International Pledging conference and Kyiv Summit on safe and innovative use of nuclear energy.
The Ambassador expressed sincere gratitude to the Latvian State and to Latvian liquidators for their contribution to the liquidation of the consequences of the disaster. There were over 6 thousand persons from Latvia who took part in the liquidation, among them – current President of Latvia Mr. Valdis Zatlers, who was a doctor in 1986.
During the meeting the participants exchanged their memories about the tragic events of 26 April 1986 and told about the social assistance they received from the Latvian State. They also presented to the Ambassador the book of memoirs of Latvian liquidators «Chernobyl is always in our memory».
