On April 26, 2010 within the framework of events on commemorating the victims of the Chernobyl tragedy, Charge d’Affairs of Ukraine in Latvia Oleksandr Kushnir spoke to the participants of the meeting near the memorial sign to Chernobyl disaster victims in the Riga University clinics of P.Stradins. President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers, representatives of the diplomatic corps, accredited in Latvia took part in the meeting.
In his speech Mr. Oleksandr Kushnir stressed the scale of the tragedy on Chernobyl atomic station, told about the outcomes of the disaster for Ukraine and the whole world. He also touched upon key priorities in overcoming the tragedy, as well as talked about the achievements of our state on this path. Special attention was given to international forums, that took place in Kyiv in April this year, e.g. International Pledging conference and Kyiv Summit on safe and innovative use of nuclear energy.
Talking about international assistance, Oleksandr Kushnir praised Latvian contribution in minimizing the negative outcomes of the disaster on the Chernobyl atomic station. There were more than 6 thousand people from Latvia that took part in the liquidation, and among them – today’s Head of State.
In his speech President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers shared his impressions about visiting the Chernobyl power plant in 1986 and later in 2008, during his state visit to Ukraine.
During the meeting the address of Prime Minister of Latvia Valdis Dombrovskis and Head of Riga city Council Nils Ushakovs were voiced. Choir of the Riga Ukrainian secondary school performed the anthem of the Republic of Latvia.
Representatives of diplomatic missions, accredited ion Latvia, members of the Latvian Union «Chernobyl», who took part in the overcoming the disaster, the members of Latvian Saeima, ministries and institutions of Latvian society, leadership of the University clinics of P.Stradins also took part in the meeting. The event was widely covered by Latvian media.
