Ukraine and Latvia Foreign Ministers discuss preparations for the Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga

On April 20 within the framework of a working visit to Luxembourg to attend the Eastern Partnership ministerial meeting Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin held bilateral meetings with his EU counterparts, including the Minister for Foreign Affairs anf Cooperation of Spain - JJose Manuel GARCIA-MARGALLO, Ministre for Foreign Affairs of Latvia - Edgars Rinkevics, Minister for Foreign and European Affairs of Slovakia - Miroslav LAJCAK, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic - Lubomir ZAORALEK and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary - Peter SZIJJARTO.

During the meeting with his Latvian counterpart, Edgars Rinkevics Pavlo Klimkin said that Ukraine expects from the Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga a clear and practical signal which will induce the Ukrainian society to continue successfully started European integration course and produce a wide spectrum of important reforms - in the economy, legal system and national management.

The sides discussed a wide range of bilateral issues and ways to stabilize the situation in Donbas. Pavlo Klimkin expressed gratitude for the consistent support of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and noticed that only full and comprehensive implementation of all points of the Minsk agreements will contribute to sustainable peace in Donbas.

The Foreign Minister of Ukraine noticed the need to deploy an international mission in support of the Minsk agreements, which will be an additional tool for stabilizing the security situation in the region.

The Minister also informed his colleagues about the main results of internal reforms in Ukraine, especially in the context of the fight against corruption, constitutional reform, decentralization of power and so on. In this connection Klimkin stressed the importance of holding local elections in parts of Donetsk and Lugansk regions according to international standards, the primary condition for what should be a ceasefire, the withdrawal of heavy weapons, providing access to the OSCE and the release of all hostages.

During these meetings foreign minister of Ukraine drew attention to the need to preserve European and transatlantic unity on the issue of continued pressure on Russia to fully perform Minsk agreements.
