On May 27 Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Latvia met with Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma.
During the talk the Ambassador thanked the Latvian side as the Presidency of the Council of the EU for the good organization of the Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga on May 21 and 22 and the efforts by Latvia to reach deliverables of the Summit.
The Prime Minister of Latvia stressed on full support of Ukraine’s priorities in relations with the EU and expressed her belief that by the end of 2015 the European Commission will decide positively on abolition of the visa regime with Ukraine to travel visa free in 2016 already. The sides also exchanged their views on the prospects of the Eastern Partnership initiative in view of the need of the differentiated approach to some partner nations with ambitious goals.
Upon the request of the Latvia Prime Minister, Ambassador Perebyinis briefed her about the development in the East of Ukraine, as well as about Russia’s and Russia-controlled militants’ ongoing violations of the Minsk agreements. Taking into consideration that Russia doesn’t stop its aggressive politics on Ukraine, Laimdota Straujuma expressed her strong belief that the EU would remain united on carrying on sanctions against the Kremlin until it fully complies its commitments and Ukraine regains the control of its territories occupied by Russia.
The sides also discussed the process of reforms in Ukraine and some trade and economic aspects of the bilateral cooperation.
