On February 5 Ambassador of Ukraine to Latvia Yevgen Perebyinis participated in a joint session of the Foreign Affairs and European Affairs Committees of the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia.
Latvian MPs were briefed about the development of bilateral relations, the situation in certain districts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, the state of implementation of the Minsk agreements, the violation of human rights in the occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Ukraine's steps to de-occupy the peninsula, the effect of the Deep and Comprehesive Free Trade Area between Ukraine and the EU and Russia's counter-measures, as well as key progress on reforms in Ukraine.
Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Ojārs Ēriks Kalniņš stressed on Latvia's suport of Ukraine amid ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine. "Unfortunately, the situation in the East of Ukraine is not improving, but Ukraine may count on support of the sovereignty and territorial integrity on the part of Latvia". He reiterated that the parliamentary debates on foreign policy, as well as the report of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, proved Ukraine was a priority of Latvian foreign policy.
The session in this format was initiated by Ojārs Ēriks Kalniņš, who visited Ukraine in November 2015 leading a delegation of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee. Besides MPs, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Latvian Foreign Ministry Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica attended the meeting.
