On the 30th anniversary of the Chornobyl accident the capital of Latvia, Riga, hosted several thematic events.
On the tragic date of 26 April the Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital hosted a solemn flower-laying ceremony at the Chornobyl accident monument. The ceremony was attended by ex-president of Latvia Valdis Zatlers, Saeima MPs, Ambassadors of Ukraine and Belarus to Latvia, the hospital chiefs and Latvian liquidators. In 1986 as many as 6000 Latvians were among liquidators of the accident. In his speech the Ambassador of Ukraine to Latvia Yevgen Perebyinis thanked Latvia for weighty contribution to the liquidation of the tragedy aftermath.
On the same day the Ministry of the Interior of Latvia hosted an award presenting ceremony to decorate Latvian liquidators of the Chornobyl accident’s consequences. On that occasion the Embassy of Ukraine in Latvia staged a thematic exhibition at the Ministry’s hall. Ukrainian talents Tetiana Gavrilenko and Viktoriya Prytuliak made an emotional performance.
Later in the day the Latvian liquidators were also presented with the Embassy awards for their courage and heroism while liquidating the aftermath of the Chornobyl accident.
On April 24 the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Riga conveyed prayer for the victims of the tragedy and the Embassy together with the Ukrainian community in Riga commemorated their memory.
