The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs in the framework of the official visit to Latvia on Tuesday.
The Parties highly appreciated the level of bilateral political dialogue. V.Lytvyn stressed the importance of providing systemic work at the level of parliaments. In his turn, the Minister noted that Latvia supports further broadening of political and economic contacts.
According to the Head of the Parliament, Ukraine attaches great importance to bilateral cooperation in consular and legal spheres. He noted that our country highly appreciates implementation of agreements in the sphere of social and pension provision.
V.Lytvyn thanked the Latvian Part for consistent support of the European aspirations of Ukraine and assistance in the transfer of European experience, promotion of respective reforms in political, legal and economic spheres as well as consistent support of Ukrainian diaspora. In this context the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada thanked Latvian authorities for constant attention to the functioning of the Riga Ukrainian secondary school.
The Head of the Parliament highly appreciated the level of cooperation in the framework of international organizations and forums, in particular, in the Council of the Baltic Sea States, saying that dynamic development of Baltic region, its huge investment potential and integration experience is of great importance to Ukraine. According to him, Ukraine wants to become an active participant of specific projects of the Council of Baltic Sea States, especially at the parliamentary level.
In his turn Mr.Minister, noted that transparency and democracy of parliamentary elections will be of great importance in "Ukrainian-EU" relations. According to him, Latvia supports the idea of continuation of cooperation between Ukraine and EU since Ukraine is a part of Europe. He expressed hopes that certain problems in the "Ukrainian-EU" relations will be settled as soon as the Ukrainian legislation is approximated to the European standards, in particular, what concerns reforms in the sphere of criminal justice.
The Chairman of the Parliament expressed his conviction that all problems should be solved in a legal way using integrated approach. Generally, V.Lytvyn believes that it is necessary to conduct systematic and comprehensive dialogue with Europe, since European integration is a conscious choice of Ukraine.
During the meeting the Parties discussed the issue of energy security as well as bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the sphere of European security.
The Head of the Parliament supported the necessity to broaden bilateral cooperation in cultural and humanitarian spheres. In his turn Mr.Minister, noted that our countries have great potential for such cooperation.
