On 25 November 2011, the solemn celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Union of Ukrainians of Latvia, one of the first organizations of Ukrainian diaspora in Latvia, took place.
Ambassador of Ukraine to Latvia Anatoliy Oliynyk read out the greeting of the First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Ruslan Demchenko to the members of the Union. "I would like to appreciate the great socio-cultural and educational activities of the Union of Ukrainians of Latvia in order to preserve national identity of today and future generations of Ukrainians on the territory of the Republic of Latvia", - the greeting said.
The Ambassador also congratulated the members of the Union of Ukrainians of Latvia and highly praised the achievements of the organization made during 15 years of its existence, including the establishment of Ukrainian community newspaper “Visnyk”, exhibitions of painters of Ukrainian origin, living in Latvia, cooperation with the Ukrainian World Congress etc.
Union members also received notes of congratulations from the Minister of Culture of Latvia Zanete Jaunzeme-Grende, and the Ukrainian communities from Lithuania and Estonia.
The audience had the opportunity to enjoy Ukrainian songs, performed by the artistic groups of Ukrainian communities, as well as performance of “Natalka-Poltavka” play by actors of Ukrainian amateur theatre.
The representatives of the Ukrainian community, Latvian intelligentsia and media took part in the event.
