On 10 November 2018 the commemoration ceremony was held in Riga within the framework of the international campaign on the occasion of international 85-day action to commemorate Holodomor of 1932 – 1933.
The commemoration events were attended by Ukrainian diplomats, Ukrainians and Latvians – among them the members of the Saeima of Latvia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia.
After the obit at the Riga parish of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church the participants in the event walked with candles through the Riga City Center to the Monument of Freedom, where the candles were lit in the memory of those, who were killed by Holodomor in Ukraine.
Charge d’Affaires a.i. Alisa Podolyak in her speech thanked Latvia for recognition of Holodomor as a genocide of Ukrainians and read 85 names of children, who died of starvation in some districts of the Odesa region alone.
In total, according to different estimates, the Holodomor, which was masterminded by the totalitarian Stalinist regime, killed 3 to 10 million Ukrainians.
