In March 2012, a number of events dedicated to the 198th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko took place in Latvia.
For instance, on 9 March 2012 the Shevchenko readings took place in the Ukrainian literature division of the Academic Library of the University of Latvia. Opening the event, Ambassador of Ukraine to Latvia Anatoliy Oliynyk stressed the role of the great poet’s art for Ukraine and the mankind. “Taras Shevchenko was one of the first to guarantee the eternity to his people, language and culture. He could place the word on guard of his Motherland” – Anatoliy Oliynyk noted.
On the same day an exhibition of Taras Shevchenko books in Ukrainian and Latvian languages was organized in the premises of Academic Library University of Latvia.
Ukrainian diaspora also organized a number of events, dedicated to the 198th anniversary of T. Shevchenko. Within the framework of the celebration the Ukrainian organization “Kobzar” from Ventspils held the concert of its group “Mrija”. The songs and poems of Taras Shevchenko were performed during the concert.
During the event the exhibition of ancient Ukrainian handicrafts from the private collection of Valentina Bazeliuk and the exhibition of silk works of Lubava Taradai were held.
The leadership of the Ventspils city council, representatives of the Ukrainian community and local media attended the event.
