On 17 December 2011, at the initiative of Association of Ukrainian organizations in Latvia, a fun winter holiday - St. Nicholas Day - was celebrated.
Young Ukrainian, among them - students Riga Ukrainian Secondary School and the Riga School of Music, performed songs and dances, and participated in a fun program, prepared by the Association. Also children can learn more about the traditions and customs of the celebration of this joyous holiday.
During the celebration a ceremony of ordaine of the material for the future rushnyk (towel) of the Latvian Ukrainians. 5-meter canva was ordained by father Gregory, thepriest of the Curch of Nicholas the Wonderworker in Jekabpils, an ethnic Ukrainian.
Towel of Latvian Ukrainians will be emboided by representatives of Ukrainian community organizations. With all the complexity of embroidery of the towel by several dozen of artists, it should be a finished piece of folk art. The action lasts from 2012 to 2013 - at every stage of the towel submit any other organization for embroidery. Towel must have Ukrainian and Latvian elements that symbolize the preservation of national identity of ethnic Ukrainians, as well as their respect for the land on which they live - Latvia.
