On April 4-8, 2016 a delegation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, representatives of the group for interparliamentary relations with the Republic of Latvia, led by the group chairman Oleksandr Kodola, visited Latvia.
The busy program provided for visits and meetings at ministries and agencies exchanging opinions on priority directions of bilateral relations and cooperation at international arena.
The central event of the program was a joint session of the Ukraine and Latvia friendship groups, meetings with Speaker of the Saeima Ināra Mūrniece and Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis. The meetings proved strong support for Ukraine in the process of reforms, territorial integrity and sovereignty, the Latvian side expressed invariable solidarity with Ukraine in its fighting against the Russian aggression.
The Ukrainian delegation expressed gratitude to Latvia for the resolute support at the state level and humanitarian assistance in treatment of Ukrainian servicemen. The Ukrainian delegation also visited the Riga Microsurgery Center, directly engaged in complicated surgeries of 6 Ukrainian injuries from ATO financed from public donations raised by the Foundation of Support for Ukraine and 3 financed by the Latvian state funds.
During the regional trip to Jelgava the MPs were familiarized with the peculiarities of local self-government, practical examples of EU grants for municipal projects. In particular, the delegation toured the modern biofuel cogeneration station Fortum as an example of a regional project uniting foreign investments and EU funds.
The visit of the Saeima group for interparliamentary relations with Ukraine to Kyiv took place on January 25-31, 2016 and was led by its chief Ainārs Mežulis.
